PECOS DRILL SITE DESIGN
Pecan Island, Louisiana

Wave transformation modeling for wave protection designIn order to provide safe passage of drilling rigs and auxiliary barges and to provide wave protection during the drilling operations, ExxonMobil requested that Coast & Harbor Engineering (CHE) determine a technically feasible alternative, based on performance, constructability, and cost. CHE performed the final design and provide engineering services during construction of the access channel, breakwater, and dredging/dredging disposal work.

Coastal Engineering Analysis tasks:
Compiled existing wind and wave data, tide elevations, tidal current data, and sediment transport data.

Conducted numerical modeling to determine wave conditions at the project site.

Qualitatively identified the relative rates of sedimentation within the dredged channel for the proposed alterations.

Determined a technically feasible and economical alternative for the approach channel, breakwater, and dredging to allow for successful drilling operations during the period of November 2005-June 2006.

Developed alternatives for breakwater(s), navigation channel, and dredging/disposal which both satisfy the project requirements of safe maneuvering in the channel, wave attenuation, and minimal sedimentation, and also comply with the stipulations of the existing permits.

Preliminary and Final Design tasks:
Once the preferred alternative was selected, completed a preliminary design that consisted of optimizing the dimensions of the alternative.

Coordinated with ExxonMobil and the General Contractor to develop the final design criteria.

Developed the sequence and schedule of construction for review by the Contractor.

Completed detailed final engineering design drawings, technical specifications, and cost estimates.
