SHORELINE PROTECTION FOR BAYFRONT PARK
Mission Bay, San Francisco, California

The project is located along the Port of San Francisco (POSF) waterfront just south of Pier 54 within the City and County of San Francisco. Coast & Harbor Engineering (CHE) was awarded the design contract as a prime consultant to the POSF. The goal was to construct a shoreline protection structure that would prevent future erosion of the upland areas which were to be developed into Bayfront Park by Mission Bay Development Group. The shore protection design needed to stabilize the shoreline in its current position for the project lifetime (50 yrs). Project disciplines included coastal engineering analysis and design, geotechnical field data collection and analysis, environmental studies and structural analysis of an existing seawall.

CHE evaluated alternative shore protection structures and designed a shore protection structure that provided a long-term stable shoreline. The preferred alternative was determined to be a rock revetment in combination with foundation improvements for a section of existing concrete seawall. The revetment is to be constructed with excavation and demolition of existing on-site materials, backfill, and installation of geotextile fabric, bedding stone and 7,000 tons of armor stone. In addition, a plan alignment was developed that minimized the demolition and excavation, as well as the new fill required to construct a viable shore protection structure. CHE prepared preliminary design submittals, as well as 60, 90, and 100 percent design submittals. The project was bid in March 2011, received 6 bids with construction in summer 2011.
