FORMER SCOTT PAPER MILL CLEANUP PROJECT
Port of Anacortes, Washington

Port of Anacortes Wave Modeling, 50 year Return PeriodThe shoreline along the former Scott Paper Mill site had experienced long-term erosion caused by site-specific hydrodynamic, littoral, and morphological conditions exacerbated by manmade activities. Coastal numerical modeling and analysis was conducted by Coast & Harbor Engineering (CHE) for the purpose of determining feasibility and developing conceptual engineering plans for alternative shore protection designs. The information from the modeling and analysis assisted in evaluating remedial alternatives for the site and formed the basis for developing more detailed engineering designs of the site alternative ultimately selected by the Washington Department of Ecology.

Two alternative configurations of the shore protection were analyzed with numerical modeling. Configuration 1 consisted of a Sill Alternative placed at the Port and MJB shorelines of the site; and Configuration 2 consisted of a Wave Attenuator located offshore of the Port Marine Area and a Sill Alternative along the MJB Marine Area shoreline. Performance criteria of the alternatives were 1) the ability to reduce wave heights; and 2) minimize the size of stable sediment on the beach.
